Gum Disease Treatment Lawndale

At Bay Dental Center our dentists and hygienists specialize in periodontal (gum) therapy. If you’re dealing with gum disease, we can give you the care and attention you need to keep your teeth and gums healthy. Along with treatment, we can help you prevent gum disease.

Gum therapy is a set of dental procedures that aim to restore your gum tissue. Gingivitis and periodontist are types of gum disease that involve inflammation, bleeding and the loss of gum tissue. If you lose gum tissue, your teeth roots can become exposed. The several types of gum therapy are important oral health interventions.

Periodontal (gum) treatment methods depend upon the type and severity of the disease. We will evaluate the extent of your gum disease and recommend the appropriate treatment. Gum disease progresses as the pocket or space between the tooth and gums gets filled with bacteria, plaque and tartar, causing irritation to the surrounding tissues. When these irritants remain in the pocket space, they can cause damage to the gums and eventually, the bone that supports the teeth. If the disease is caught in the early stages of gingivitis, and no damage has been done, one to two regular cleanings will be recommended. If the disease has progressed to more advanced stages, a special periodontal cleaning called scaling and root planing (deep cleaning) will be recommended.

We can provide the help you need to maintain healthy gums.

Root Planing and Scaling

Root planing and scaling are non-surgical therapies that your dentist can perform individually or together. Root planing involves making the roots of your teeth smooth so that bacteria cannot grow on them. Any tartar is removed. Root scaling involves cleaning the roots below the gum line. You might need antibiotics if the dentist discovers signs of an infection in your gums. These procedures are interventions that can be done in the early stage of gum disease.

Guided Tissue Regeneration

If you have lost some gum tissue, a guided regeneration process may help you to grow new tissue. A biocompatible fabric, gel or matrix can be applied to the area around your tooth root. This material encourages new gum tissue to grow. This may help protect you from complications of gum disease. A small incision is made to access your tooth’s root, and you will receive an anesthetic to eliminate pain during the procedure.

Laser Treatments

If you are uncomfortable sitting in the dentist’s chair for gum therapy, laser treatments might be an option for you. The use of laser treatments for gum disease is in ongoing research, but studies show that it can be as effective as root scaling or planing. The dentist uses a safe, handheld laser to stimulate your gum tissue.
